SPEAKERS

Kristen L. Rifenbark, MSA, CPHRM, CPPS, is the Risk, Document and Patient Safety Coordinator at Scheurer Hospital in Pigeon, Michigan. Kristen has been in Risk Management for 10 years. She obtained her Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management designation in 2013 and her Certified Professional in Patient Safety designation in 2015. Kristen has been an active MSHRM member since 2012 and currently holds the position of President-Elect. Kristen holds a Bachelor’s degree from Central Michigan University in Business Administration and a Master’s of Science in Administration degree, also from CMU.

Rana Awdish, MD, is the Director of the Pulmonary Hypertension Program at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit and a Critical Care Physician. She also serves as Medical Director of Care Experience for the Henry Ford Health System. Dr. Awdish’s mandate as well as her passion is to improve the patient experience across the system. After suffering a sudden critical illness herself in 2008, she has become a tireless activist, refocusing her fellow providers on the patient experience and improving empathy through connection and communication. She lectures to physicians, hospital leadership and medical schools around the country. Her book, In Shock: My Journey from Death to Recovery and the Redemptive Power of Hope, has been featured in the Washington Post, NPR, The Today Show, The Times Literary Supplement, and is now an LA Times Bestseller. 

Beth Wittman, JD, is a principal with the Kitch firm who focuses her practice on appellate law. She is licensed to practice law in Michigan and Ohio, as well as the U.S. District Court Eastern District of Michigan and the U.S. Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals. With extensive experience in both federal and state appellate law, Ms. Wittmann focuses her practice on preparing appeals in all forums and dealing with complex issues of law, including medical malpractice, tort reform, employment discrimination, constitutional law, probate, healthcare law and HIPAA/HITECH.

Geri Amori, PhD, ARM, CPHRM, DFASHRM, is the Vice President for Academic Affairs for Med-IQ, a Coverys company. She is a nationally known presenter, educator, coach and facilitator on risk management and patient safety issues. Having taught psychology and communication skills at the graduate and community college level, her area of passion and expertise is in all aspects of human interactive interface. Dr. Amori has served as Vice President for the Education Center of the Risk Management and Patient Safety Institute, Principal of Communicating HealthCare, and as Risk Manager for Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, Vermont. Prior to joining the Risk Management field in 1989, she served as Psychopharmacology Clinic and Research Coordinator with University Associates in Psychiatry at the University of Vermont.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

This program will enable participants to:

  • Describe the requirements of The Joint Commission’s Professional Practice Evaluation.
  • Illustrate how Scheurer Hospital’s PPE Program works.
  • Describe how the PPE process compliments an Enterprise Risk Management Program.
  • Describe how medical training shapes physicians.
  • Define changes needed in training.
  • Discuss the role of onboarding in culture change.
  • Describe what it takes to create resilient systems to support their people. 
  • Discuss recent decisions of the Michigan appellate courts addressing issues relevant to healthcare law.
  • Discuss the fear/anger hormone to interpretation cycle.
  • Describe strategies to address angry behavior in others.
  • Give examples of de-escalation strategies.
  • Describe strategies to manage your own fear/anger reactions.

CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDITS

This educational activity is being jointly provided by Med-IQ and the Michigan Society for Healthcare Risk Management.

This nursing activity has been approved for up to 5.0 contact hours.

Med-IQ is accredited with distinction as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

This meeting has been approved for a total of 5.0 contact hours of Continuing Education Credit toward fulfillment of the requirements of ASHRM designations of FASHRM (Fellow) and DFASHRM (Distinguished Fellow) and towards CPHRM renewal.
