Opioid and Controlled Substance Prescribing in Michigan
Dealing with the Challenge of New Laws, New Prescribing Requirements, and New Sanctions for Non-Compliant Prescribers

Program Description

At the end of 2017, the Michigan Legislature passed an array of new requirements for prescribing opioids and controlled substances, creating a new framework for prescribing practices.  However, the relatively quick passage of the bills and limited amount of industry input accepted by the Legislature has resulted in areas of ambiguity in the law, and concern that certain requirements do not reflect the realities of patient needs, health care organization staffing, and reimbursement.  This presentation analyzes these new requirements, identifies the areas of uncertainty, and lays the foundation to facilitate continued discussion among health care provider to identify the best practice solutions to address the concerns.

Learning Objectives

This program will enable participants to:

  1. Define the new legal requirements in Michigan for prescribing opioids and controlled substances
  2. Identify the remaining areas of uncertainty or ambiguity in the law
  3. Assess practical, best practice suggestions to comply with law despite ambiguity
  4. Formulate an internal (mental) compliance checklist for dealing appropriately with opioids and other controlled substances
