Program Description

Unlike IQ, Emotional Intelligence (EQ) is a skill which can be learned.  EQ is a critical skill set for risk managers, it is important when dealing with leadership, physicians, patients and family members.  Mastery of EQ is also crucial for career advancement.  This session will describe both key components and strategies central to success.  

Learning Objectives

This program will enable participants to:

  • Define Emotional Intelligence (EQ).
  • Identify the components critical to EQ.
  • Outline ways to continuously improve EQ skills.


Lisa Ramthun, RN, MSN, CPHRM, FASHRM, is a healthcare executive, registered nurse, and expert in helping high consequence industries drive reliability through system design, human behavior, and enterprise risk management strategies. Lisa has a background in all principles of risk management including risk financing, claims management, enterprise risk management, clinical risk management, and loss prevention. Prior to starting her own firm, Lisa spent 12 years as the corporate vice president of risk management and patient safety for a $5.6 billion not for profit integrated healthcare delivery system with 16 acute care hospitals, ambulatory care services, home health, hospice, outpatient, skilled nursing facilities, community clinics and physician organizations. In this role, Lisa had system oversight for the risk management, patient safety, captive and claims management, clinical data analytics, research, infection prevention, and regulatory readiness functions.

Target Audience

This program is intended for an audience of healthcare risk managers as well as those who support various risk management functions.


Registration is open only to MSHRM members. There is no charge and space is limited. If multiple people are attending from the same organization (whether they are MSHRM members are not), please use one computer/phone connection in order to allow as many people to attend as possible. Connection instructions will be included in the confirmation email you receive after registering for the program.

Continuing Education Credits

This meeting has been approved for a total of 1.0 contact hours of Continuing Education Credit toward fulfillment of the requirements of ASHRM designations of FASHRM (Fellow) and DFASHRM (Distinguished Fellow) and towards CPHRM renewal.
