The Third Victims of Adverse Events: Risk Management & Patient Safety Professionals

Program Description

Harm from adverse events doesn’t always stop with patients and their families. In recent years attention has been drawn to the plight of “second victims,” the healthcare workers involved in an incident, who can also experience significant harm. But even that doesn’t tell the whole story. This presentation will describe how patient safety and risk management professionals can become the “third victims” of adverse events. It will discuss the types of harm experienced by risk management and patient safety professionals, the causes and contributing factors that lead to harm, and recommendations for improvement.

Alan J. Card, PhD, MPH, CPHQ, CPHRM is an Assistant Professor at the UC San Diego School of Medicine, where his research focuses on healthcare safety, quality improvement, and wellbeing. He earned his PhD from the University of Cambridge, in England, where he studied at the Engineering Design Centre, and his MPH from the University of South Florida. He has been an active contributor to the risk management community for over a decade as both a researcher and ASHRM volunteer, and previously served as Editor of the Journal of Healthcare Risk Management.

Registration is open only to MSHRM members. There is no charge and space is limited.
